4 Key Takeaways from the Latest TIA Standards Update with Dan Barrera

Telecommunications standards are constantly evolving to keep pace with faster networks, AI, Power over Ethernet (PoE) and smarter buildings. But what changes should network professionals be preparing for? 

In the latest TREND Networks TEK TALK podcast, Dan Barrera, Product Innovation Manager at Trend Networks and an active contributor to Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) standards discussions, shares insights from the latest TIA committee meetings. 1. Extended Reach Ethernet is Becoming a Bigger Focus 

According to Dan, one of the most significant areas of development is extended reach Ethernet. While structured cabling standards traditionally specify a maximum channel length of 100 metres, many organisations are already deploying longer cable runs for applications such as IP cameras, wireless access points and outdoor infrastructure. 

Rather than creating a new mandatory standard, the TIA is developing a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) that will provide guidance on designing, testing and deploying these longer links safely, taking into account factors such as cable gauge, attenuation, temperature and PoE performance. 

2. MPTL is Now an Accepted Structured Cabling Standard 

Dan explains that Modular Plug Terminated Links (MPTL) were introduced after installers increasingly terminated cables directly into connected devices instead of wall outlets. 

The updated TIA standard now formally supports this installation method while providing certified testing procedures, helping installers maintain performance, compliance and warranty requirements for devices such as CCTV cameras, wireless access points and digital displays. 

3. DCRU Testing is Now Essential for Reliable PoE 

As Power over Ethernet continues to power more devices across enterprise networks, Dan highlights an important standards update: DC Resistance Unbalance (DCRU) testing is now required for newly certified Category 5e through Category 8 installations. 

The purpose is simple, identify resistance imbalances that can generate heat, reduce network performance and affect high-power PoE deployments. It’s a change designed to improve the long-term reliability of modern network infrastructure. 

4. AI is Driving the Next Generation of Fibre Networks 

The rapid growth of AI data centres is accelerating demand for faster, higher-density fibre infrastructure. 

Dan discusses several technologies currently being developed through TIA standards work, including higher-density fibre connectors, MPO innovations, multi-mode APC connectors and multi-core fibre. These advancements are designed to support the massive bandwidth requirements of AI while increasing fibre density inside modern data centres.
