Measuring the performance of cloud software for cable certifiers

In today’s world, it seems that nobody is content to sit and wait around for software to just finish doing its thing. We are all busy and time is money. So, if you’re switching to cloud software to manage your cable certifier test data, there are some key metrics to look for to measure the system’s performance.

Tester manufacturers dictate your performance

The performance of any cloud software and the resulting user experience is going to be greatly affected by the backend software and the amount of processing power allocated.

The host (your tester manufacturer) can specify essentially how many CPUs they want to dedicate to their application at any moment depending on user demand. This is a cost/performance calculation. The host can reduce costs by limiting CPUs thus slowing the performance of the application, or they can provide a high-performance experience (at more expense to them) at times when more users are online.

If you’re getting a slow or unreliable experience, it may be that the manufacturer is simply not funding enough CPUs to effectively deal with your needs.

To ensure that users can minimise their capital expenditure, with the TREND AnyWARE Cloud test management system, all the disk space and processing power needed is provided as part of the solution at no extra charge.

User bandwidth also plays a part

Upload and test processing speed also depend on your bandwidth as the user.  If your internet connection is limited to 2-3 Mb/s, the cloud service cannot be blamed for slow processing.

However, assuming you have a speedy internet connection of >20Mb/s upstream, the cloud should be fed a continuous stream of data that needs to be ingested and processed. Copper certification results contain a lot of data, and if the cloud software allows full analysis of the data (not just a preview) it needs to process all those test points so that the data plots can be presented in full detail. Ideally, this process should happen in near real-time.

Look for a cloud solution for your certifier, such as the TREND AnyWARE Cloud, where the cable certifier test results can be viewed on the cloud with minimal delay.  Continuous backup also helps keep data secure, so it can be dependably accessed anytime, from anywhere with an internet connection, helping increase collaboration and productivity.

Generating reports should be fast

Report generating speed is the time it takes to generate PDF reports from the moment the user selects the many hundreds of tests from the cable certifier and starts the reporting process.

This is another function that is CPU intensive, and the time taken depends on how the host chooses to ration CPU time.   For example, with the TREND AnyWARE Cloud, all the processing power you need is included.  This is on top of other ways it saves you time, such as eliminating the need to install software updates – the cloud solution is always running the latest version.

When evaluating cloud solutions, it might be a good idea to have a demonstration of both test processing time and report generation time.  Our team would be happy to show you how fast you can carry out tests and manage your data with a LanTEK IV-S cable certifier and the TREND AnyWARE Cloud.
